It’s that time of year again. There’s a chill in the air—and creeping up your spines—and if you listen closely enough when night falls, I swear you can hear a wolf howling in the distance. For me, October brings the best night of the year: Halloween. I have a major sweet tooth, so I have pretty much spent my life chasing the thrill of childhood Halloween nights.
But really, was there any moment better than the reveal of your trick-or-treating haul at the end of the night? My sister, best friend, and I would gather around, dump our candy, then sort and trade it like a veritable black market for confectionery goods. And it seems I’m not the only one who holds that tradition in their heart—and in their taste memory.
In fact, it’s exactly what inspired the ice cream that has quickly become one of my favorites as an adult. That’s right: Salt & Straw’s The Great Candycopia is back.
The Great Candycopia Is Back at Salt & Straw
Fresh off breaking the internet with its Taco Bell collab, ice cream scoop shop Salt & Straw has brought back its fan-favorite flavor, The Great Candycopia. The candy-packed ice cream is one of my favorite flavors that the brand makes, and one I look forward to all year. Evidently, I’m not alone.
In a recent video posted to its Instagram, Salt & Straw’s Head Ice Cream Maker, Tyler Malek, said The Great Candycopia is probably the brand’s “top seller of all time.” So what makes it so good? Candy, of course! But that’s not all.
Salt & Straw is known for its high-quality ice cream with (arguably) even higher-quality mix-ins. While The Great Candycopia—or just Candycopia, as many fans call it—is inspired by Kit Kats, Snickers, Reese’s, and Heath, it doesn’t just feature pieces of leftover candy. Instead, Salt & Straw mixes homemade versions of each candy bar into salted butterscotch ice cream to create a perfectly elevated, decidedly more grown-up take on the nostalgic flavors you know and love.
But all you really need to know is it’s seriously some of the best ice cream I’ve ever had, and my boyfriend and I are currently making space in our freezer to stock up before this seasonal flavor disappears once again. And we’re not the only ones doing so.
“Candycopia is the reason for the season. I look forward to this flavor every October and make sure to clear space in my freezer for several pints,” reads one review on Salt & Straw’s website.
“Candycopia lived up to the hype. Probably the greatest pint of ice cream I’ve ever had,” says another. “Literally the best ice cream in the U.S.,” claims one reviewer.
If you’re now suddenly craving candy and ice cream, Candycopia is back in scoop and pint form in Salt & Straw shops for the month of October, alongside the rest of the Halloween Series. (The Jack o’ Lantern Pumpkin bread is another favorite of mine.) And if you don’t have a scoop shop near you, Salt & Straw offers nationwide shipping, so there’s nothing standing between you and reliving your best Halloween memories—except maybe the mailman.
