Key Takeaways
- Taco Bell is testing three new menu items in the U.S.
- The offerings include two new food items with signature Taco Bell proteins and four new flavors of a fan-favorite drink.
Taco Bell is always releasing exciting menu items, whether it’s a brand-new creation or the return of a discontinued fan-favorite. In the last few months alone, the fast food chain has debuted a new Y2K-inspired menu, expanded its crispy chicken offerings, announced six new beverages, and brought back the beloved Cheesy Street Chalupas. Now, Taco Bell is rolling out even more innovative items.
But, unfortunately, there’s a big catch.
Taco Bell Introduces New Tostada, Burrito, and Energy Refrescas
Taco Bell
Not all of the products from Taco Bell’s test kitchen make it all the way to the drive-thru. While all permanent menu items start in the same kitchen, some items—like the Steak & Cheese Tacodilla—get tested at certain locations in the U.S. before they get the green light for national consumption. Just like past tests, Taco Bell recently announced the addition of three new menu items, but unfortunately, not all fans will have easy access to these orders.
For Austin, Texas-based fans, the Cantina Chicken menu is expanding in test markets. The new Cantina Chicken Double Tostada features the fan-favorite slow-roasted chicken and black beans stacked between two crunchy tostadas. The tostada is piled high with Taco Bell‘s Avocado Verde sauce, a melty three-cheese blend, sour cream, purple cabbage, and fresh pico de gallo for a satisfying crunch with zesty and bold flavor at $6.99.
For Taco Bell customers in North Carolina, Cheesy Dipping Burritos just got a delicious upgrade. The new Double Dipping Burritos, which are currently being tested in Charlotte, feature two snack-sized burritos packed with your choice of grilled steak or slow-roasted chicken. Regardless of your protein choice, each burrito is layered with melty cheese and Taco Bell’s Avocado Ranch sauce.Â

The real upgrade? Each order of Double Dipping Burritos is served with a split dip cup that features Chile Lime Crema sauce on one side and a blend of crunchy, seasoned crushed tortilla strips and crispy cotija cheese on the other. Depending on location, the Double Dipping Burritos—including the dip cup—are priced between $5.99 and $6.99.
Beyond the new food items, Taco Bell is now testing brand-new Energy Refrescas around San Francisco and the Bay Area. Energy Refrescas bring bold flavors with an extra caffeine boost to keep you going for just $4.99. Two of the new drinks are made with Rockstar Energy and boast 200mg of caffeine. Both the Tropical Punch Rockstar Energy Refresca and Pineapple Lime Rockstar Energy Refresca feature Rockstar Focus drinks, which contain Lion’s Mane, B-vitamins, guarana, and taurine.
Taco Bell is also launching two Energy Refrescas powered with 160mg of caffeine from green coffee extract. Both the Electric Punch Energy Refresca and the Berry Burst Energy Refresca contain L-theanine, vitamin B12, and guarana for an energizing boost.
Just like previous Taco Bell test products, it’s unclear if these three new menu items will make it to the chain nationwide. If you want to try the Tostadas, Double Dipping Burritos, or any of the four Energy Refrescas, be sure to head to Taco Bell locations in Austin, Charlotte, and San Francisco if you can.
Personally, I’ll be noshing on the new Y2K Decades Menu—and browsing flights to each of those cities just in case.
