It’s no surprise that football players eat a lot. But one look at 6’ 5″ Travis Kelce and 6’ 3” Jason Kelce, and you can absolutely understand why—it takes a ton of food to fuel those Super Bowl-winning footballers.
We already have a pretty good idea about what the NFL brothers indulge in—we’re talking Burger King Whoppers, Reese’s Puffs cereal, and heaping piles of French toast—because as much as they love eating, they also love discussing eating on their podcast “New Heights.”
However, if you really want to know what the Kansas City Chiefs tight end and former Philadelphia Eagles center eat the most, your best bet is going to the source who fed them for 18 years: Mama Kelce.
In an interview with Allrecipes about her Heluva Good! partnership, Donna Kelce shared what it was like feeding two busy boys who grew up playing multiple sports.
The 3-Ingredient Snack Donna Kelce Made For Jason and Travis
“I wish I could say [we had] really healthy food, but it wasn’t. It was mostly takeout,” she said with a laugh. “A lot of chicken wings, a lot of pizza. It was just do what you can with what you’ve got.”
But it wasn’t all delivery pizza, since the Kelce brothers obviously have shared an affinity for their mom’s recipes. They’re constantly raving about her chocolate chip cookies, cinnamon marshmallow rolls, and blueberry muffins.
“I’m a good baker. I’m not the best at being a cook,” Mama Kelce admitted.
But she did tell Allrecipes that she loves to put together snacks—and you likely need a lot of snacks when your sons could each finish an entire chicken by themselves in high school.
What snacks were on rotation in the Kelce household? The usual packaged nuts and trail mixes, according to Mama Kelce, but also an easy-to-make, three-ingredient recipe that’s always a hit. Ham and cheese sandwiches.
We know the Kelce brothers love their Honey Baked ham—so much that it made an appearance at both Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner growing up—so it’s no surprise that ham is on the snack menu, too. While Mama Kelce didn’t elaborate much on whether the sandwiches were prepared cold or hot or had any condiments, you really can’t go wrong with any ham and cheese iteration. Plus, we know that picky eater Travis absolutely hates mayonnaise, so ham and cheese might just be as far as he’d go on a sammie.
Either way, this relatable snack is one we’ve likely all reached for in the past—so, just like the Kelces, we’ll be keeping the ingredients on hand for a grab-and-go meal next time we need a mid-day pick-me-up.
