A zester is one of those tools that can change the way you cook. I went years without using one. I would finely dice ginger and garlic by hand, or use my box grater for cheeses. While it was fine, I didn’t realize how much better it could be. My first zester was a gift, and is now one of the most used and loved tools in my kitchen. Â
When you use a zester, ginger and garlic get finely grated, melting into whatever dish you’re making. It also makes quick work of zesting citrus to add a zip to your cocktails, pastas, or baked goods. Hard cheeses, like Parmesan or Pecorino Romano, turn into a light and airy pile of nuttiness. No more big chunks of cheese. And no more trying to push hard cheeses through a box grater.
I like my kitchen tools and appliances to be as versatile as possible. So, when I saw this Ikea two-in-one zester, I knew it would be a great way to save space while still enjoying the benefits of two different products. Plus, it’s priced at more than 80 percent less than a popular name brand version!Â
Ikea’s Uppfylld Handheld Zester
Allrecipes / IKEA
Ikea’s Uppfylld Handheld Zester is a great copycat of Microplane’s Dual Blade Zester, which sells for $29.99. But Ikea’s version is a fraction of the cost at just $3.99. Both feature two different-sized graters on one plane. The smaller option is great for zesting citrus, as well as grating nutmeg, garlic, or ginger. The larger side is perfect for grating cheese over your pastas, casseroles, salads, and more.Â
There are a few key differences between the two products. First, the Ikea version has a soft-grip rim around the stainless steel blade, making it more comfortable to hold. Whereas, the Microplane version has a rounded stainless steel edge.Â
The Ikea zester is also oriented opposite of the Microplane version. Whichever side you want to use has to face upward. Then, you grate from the very top—down and away from you, stopping at the half way point before hitting the other side. However, the Microplane version is the opposite, grating from the bottom half down. It’s a small difference, but every cook has their preferences.Â
“Easy to clean and I really appreciate the slide-on cover,” shared one Ikea reviewer on the product page. “It works great and has become very useful.”
One reviewer shared that they used this Ikea tool to finely grate lemon zest for lemon blueberry muffins. “Perfect,” they said. “Quick and easy to use. Created a super fine zest that hardly needed any additional chopping. This is my new favorite kitchen toy. Love the safety cover that securely slides on to protect against accidents. What a deal!”
What a deal, indeed, Make sure to pick up this kitchen gadget the next time you visit Ikea, or order online. Not only is it great to have on hand in your own kitchen, it would make a fabulous gift for your foodie friends and family members.Â
