Some food combinations stand the test of time: chips and salsa, bagels and cream cheese, spaghetti and meatballs. Some flavors are just meant to be paired, such as the combination of marshmallow and peanut butter in the Fluffernutter Sandwich. While s’mores and Rice Krispies Treats may do the heavy lifting for the marshmallow industry, the humble Fluffernutter deserves its moment of glory, too.

This combo has an interesting American Revolution association, too. According to the New England Historical Society, Paul Revere’s great-great-great-granddaughter, Emma Curtis actually invented this sandwich during WWI. Years earlier, she and her brother founded the Curtis Marshmallow Company and soon began popularizing its flagship product: Snowflake Marshmallow Crème, aka marshmallow fluff.

During the war, Curtis published a recipe for a “Liberty Sandwich,” which called for Snowflake Marshmallow Crème and peanut butter—the earliest known example of the iconic sandwich.

If you’re a fan of these flavors or this history lesson has made you hungry, you’ll want to hurry to Aldi this week because one of new “Aisle of Shame” finds is a celebration of the Fluffernutter. It combines the flavors of marshmallow and peanut butter in a whole new, snackable, delicious way.

Aldi Releases New Fluffer Nutter Trail Mix

Allrecipes / Aldi

Aldi’s Southern Grove brand (the label behind my favorite honey roasted peanuts) just released a new Fluffer Nutter Trail Mix that will be sold from Oct. 1–7. The packages have eight ounces of trail mix, which includes marshmallow-filled peanut mini cups (yum), marshmallow flavored chunks, honey roasted peanuts, roasted peanuts, and peanut drops. It sounds like the yummiest combination for a midday treat or an on-the-go snack.  They are selling for $4.89, though prices may change regionally.

We love Fluffernutter-inspired desserts, from cupcakes and blondies to Aldi’s recent Fluffernutter cookies, which fans called their “favorite cookie Aldi has ever made.” But Fluffernutter trail mix? This one is new.

The Fluffer Nutter Trail Mix isn’t Aldi’s first foray into dessert-inspired snack mixes. The brand continues to release fun riffs of our favorite sweets in trail mix form, such as Turtle Sundae, Cotton Candy, S’mores, Strawberry Lemonade, and Birthday Cake. And this week, Aldi is also selling a peanut butter and jelly version.

But much like those other innovative snack mixes, this Fluffer Nutter Trail Mix is only around for one week. So, make sure to swing by your local Aldi to try it before it disappears from shelves.
