We know the best potluck desserts don’t exactly reinvent the wheel. But sometimes, you don’t want to show up with something that’s been done a hundred times—you want it to wow. Whether you’re prepping for a holiday party, a football tailgate, or just having a few guests over, planning something a little special can go a long way.

Well, allow us to introduce our test kitchen’s new favorite wow-worthy treat: a chocolatey, crunchy, completely craveable dessert that comes together with just six ingredients—and without ever turning on the oven.

Meet Our New Favorite Dessert: Chocolate Crunch Cake

We’re sure you’re familiar with the classic Rice Krispies treat, but we’d bet you’ve never seen them quite like this before. And if you love that sticky-sweet, chewy bite of the original, you’re going to want to keep reading.

This brilliantly simple recipe comes from creator @ilbambinonyc_ on Instagram, who says it’s “one of the most requested dessert treats” they’re asked to make. “I’ve never had anything comparable to these,” the creator adds. “You’ll be asked to make these all the time.”

Basically, this recipe takes the traditional marshmallow-and-cereal bars and dials them up to eleven. Instead of the standard crispy-chewy texture throughout, this version adds a luscious, glossy chocolate ganache topping for an ultra-rich bite—plus a layer of peanut butter for the perfect salty-sweet flavor pairing.

We might call it a “cake,” but that’s a loose interpretation of the word. Think of it more as a snacking cake—or really, a layered dessert bar. All we know is as soon as our Senior Culinary Producer Nicole McLaughlin saw it on Instagram, she said, “I have to make it.” And we’re pretty sure you’ll feel the same way.

How to Make Chocolate Crunch Cake

Allrecipes

The recipe starts just like the classic Rice Krispies Treats: Melt a full bag of marshmallows with a couple of tablespoons of butter to create a sticky marshmallow base. Then, instead of plain Rice Krispies, swap in a box of chocolatey Cocoa Krispies and stir until everything is evenly coated.

Press the cereal-marshmallow mixture into an even layer on a sheet pan lined with a silicone mat or parchment paper that’s been spritzed with cooking spray. Use a spatula to gently pat it down until it’s smooth and even. Then spread on a thin layer—about 1/3 cup total—of peanut butter.

Now for the crowning touch of this “cake”: the chocolate ganache. In a double boiler (or a heatproof bowl over simmering water), melt 12 ounces of milk chocolate with 3/4 cup of heavy cream and a few tablespoons of butter, stirring until smooth and glossy. Pour the ganache over the peanut butter layer, using a spatula to spread it evenly from edge to edge.

Let the chocolate ganache set before slicing into squares, then get ready to share with everyone in the vicinity.

“The smooth frosting with that crunch makes for the perfect bite,” Nicole shared. “I love the thin layer of peanut butter, because, well, peanut butter and chocolate…but also because it adds a hint of saltiness to balance out the sweet.”

So, next time you’re looking for a simple yet showstopping dessert, pull out this easy, quick, and dangerously delicious recipe. It might still be a hidden gem for now—but trust us, it’s far too good to stay that way for long.
