Remember the Tickle Me Elmo frenzy of Christmas 1996? That has nothing on the last week of Starbucks’ glass bear cup mania.
The adorable holiday drinkware (with its teeny, weeny beanie!) has sent fans scrambling, trying to track down the hot, new collectible. And it has left many distraught, as locations across the U.S. didn’t have enough stock to meet the incredibly high demand. This comes on the heels of the Starbucks x Hello Kitty holiday collab, which fans also passionately snatched up.
But the Seattle siren has even more merriment in the works. We’re not done with Christmas cups, y’all. A new festive collaboration with a beloved designer brand is about to hit store shelves.
Sorry, Bearista. You’ve been dethroned by a monkey.
Starbucks Announces New Holiday Line With Roller Rabbit
Starbucks has just confirmed that a new holiday collection is coming to stores next month, featuring a brand-new collaboration with the whimsical brand Roller Rabbit.
If you’ve never heard of this fashion label, Roller Rabbit is an adorable, loungewear line with matching designs for babies, kids, and adults. Its signature pattern, Monkey, is found throughout all of its collections and features cute dancing primates that are often accessorized to meet the seasonal theme. Roller Rabbit is considered a luxury label for its premium cotton and silk PJs, but it’s not a stuffy brand with all of its flamboyant, colorful patterns packed with personality.
So, for these designs to appear on something other than fabric—and at a much lower price point—is a very big deal. Fans are chomping at the bit to snag one of these new cups. Although Starbucks has not officially released any information on the new collection, some stores across the country have already sold the items by accident, and eagle-eyed fans have shared leaked photos on social media.
From early posts, it appears that the new lineup includes several tumblers, some designed for hot beverages and others with straws for cold drinks, as well as a short, insulated travel mug. There are a couple of designs featuring Monkey as well as little illustrations of iconic Starbucks menu items, all in the Roller Rabbit aesthetic.
“I went to my local Target Starbucks in hopes of getting the bear cup,” someone posted on Reddit. “But there was a line and they were sold out as soon as I got in. However, I saw the Roller Rabbit collab and got excited hoping that I could purchase one early. As I got up to the register, the barista told me that they can’t sell them yet as it was supposed to be released Dec. 2 and that it was their mistake for putting them out early. Such a tease, but I couldn’t be mad because they were just following the rules.”
But that didn’t stop this fan.
“I went to my local Harris Teeter for my fourth attempt at trying to find the bear mug,” the Redditor added later on in the thread. “And they had the Roller Rabbit collab! I ended up purchasing the cup I wanted, which was the clear one with the pink monkeys, but beware! The price is ringing up as $29.95 instead of $24.95. The Starbucks baristas were so sweet and ended up ringing up something else for me so I could get the lower price.”
Over the last couple of days, another Reddit thread has been updated with reports of Starbucks locations mistakenly selling the new items—right down to specific airport terminal Starbucks locations. And the chatter on Instagram and TikTok is turning into a full-on tidal wave of anticipation, confusion, and anger, as some stores are either following the rules or not at all.
“Got the last one in my town,” a fan on TikTok bragged. “I’m stressed I’ll miss it,” someone else chimed in.
‘Tis the season. If you have these new collectible cups at the top of your wish list, the collection officially launches on Dec. 2. As so many different stores have sold these cups early for various prices—or chosen to not sell displayed items at all—it’s important to be kind to your baristas this holiday season. Because remember: Santa’s always watching.
