I’m aware that, as a woman living alone in a small apartment with limited pantry space, I’m not exactly Costco’s target customer. Most people probably think I’m out of my mind for keeping a membership. But some things you just can’t get anywhere else—and as someone who grew up on Kirkland Signature staples, I can’t imagine giving it up.
Still, if I had to narrow my Costco must-haves down to one item, I could do it in a heartbeat: the peanut butter.
Costco’s Kirkland Signature Organic Creamy Peanut Butter
Simply put, there are always at least two jars of Kirkland Signature Organic Creamy Peanut Butter in my pantry. I’m a full-fledged peanut butter fiend—I’ve tried nearly every brand out there—and while I could give a TED Talk on why this one tops them all, I’ll try to keep it brief.
To start, the texture is silky-smooth. I store mine in the fridge (upside down), and it stays thick yet perfectly creamy and spreadable. As it warms to room temperature, it softens into a luscious drizzle—ideal for topping pancakes or sliced apples—without ever separating into oil and solids. That’s especially impressive given its short ingredient list: just dry-roasted organic Valencia peanuts and sea salt. No stabilizers, no sugars, no seed oils—just pure, old-fashioned peanut perfection.

The flavor is rich and robust with a good hit of salt, so even a small spoonful packs a punch—whether I’m pairing it with dark chocolate or blending it into a banana smoothie. More often than not, though, I’m just eating it straight from the jar as a late-night snack.
And finally, you have the cost: two massive 28-ounce jars for just around $10. Exceptional, organic peanut butter at that price? A steal is an understatement.
I’ve been in a long-term commitment with this peanut butter for years, even converting other peanut butter obsessives. So you can only imagine my devastation when a breakup hit me out of the blue: Apparently, Costco has discontinued its beloved PB.
Kirkland Signature Peanut Butter Is Missing From Shelves
Over the last few weeks, fans have noticed the Kirkland Signature Organic Creamy Peanut Butter disappearing from shelves and marked “out of stock” online. Customers are feeling the loss: “The Costco PB is seriously the best peanut butter in the world, so I’m so sad it has been deleted in the system,” wrote @costcofoodreviews on Instagram.
Sadly, all the pleading in the world might not help. When we chatted with Costco’s customer service, a warehouse insider shared that the product has been “temporarily discontinued” due to a supplier or vendor issue, which, as we know, is a familiar story for many discontinued Costco favorites—and one even the retailer can’t control.
In the meantime, Costco has brought in a stand-in: Naturally More Organic Peanut Butter, made by Hampton Farms in North Carolina. Like the Kirkland version, it contains only organic peanuts and sea salt and comes in the same two-pack bundle at a similar price.
But fans aren’t buying it—literally and figuratively. It’s earned a disappointing 2.5 out of 5 stars online, with reviewers calling it “a disaster.” As one customer explained, “The texture is gluey, the flavor is off, and the oil separation is worse than ever. It tastes processed, almost metallic, and somehow manages to be both gritty and runny at the same time.”
As bleak as things look on the peanut butter front, there’s still reason for hope. This isn’t the first time supply issues have forced Costco to pull its signature spread, and in the past, it’s made a quick comeback once production was sorted out.
For now, if you happen to see any jars still lingering on shelves, grab them while you can. No one knows how long the shortage will last. As for me, I’ll be rationing the last of my stash and crossing my fingers for its return—because this is one Kirkland staple that truly can’t be replaced.
