The midnight snack is a universal experience. No matter who you are, when the late-night munchies grab hold, it’s practically impossible to head back to dreamland without fulfilling your craving.
Some of us may keep it simple, like ex-footballer Terry Bradshaw’s simple spoon of peanut butter or Snoop Dogg’s hard-boiled eggs. Others might whip out some true cooking skills, like Gordon Ramsay with his sourdough bread topped with Heinz Baked Beans, a duck egg, and cheese. Or, maybe, you’re like The Rock and choose a midnight snack that’s so unique—like a plate of sushi with Teremana Tequila—that some might consider it a tad unhinged.
Whatever your midnight snacking style is, though, we respect it.
Matthew McConaughey recently shared the late-night snack that he eats by the glow of the open refrigerator door, and we have to admit, it’s one we’ve enjoyed plenty of times, too.
Matthew McConaughey’s Favorite Midnight Snack
In a recent interview with LadBible TV, McConaughey and his “The Lost Bus” co-star America Ferrera rated U.S. and UK snacks. In the video, Ferrera removes the cloche, and the pair are met with two items: the UK’s Waitrose Pickled Silverskin Onions and the U.S.’s Van Holten’s Hot and Spicy Pickle.
As soon as he sees the options, McConaughey blurts out, “I love pickles, I consider myself a pickle connoisseur.”
McConaughey seems to be a connoisseur of many foods, from tuna salad to burgers, but he admits that only the pickle gets the acclaim as “one of my favorite midnight snacks.”
“Cucumbers are so overrated,” McConaughey remarks.
“But these are cucumbers,” Ferrara adds.
“But it’s an aged cucumber, though. A cucumber has no identity. It just fills space in your salad,” he responds.
A salty dill pickle isn’t that uncommon as a late-night snack—and it’s not just because they’re tasty.
“Pickles are good [and] they also stop your sweet tooth. At nighttime, when you want something sweet, eat a pickle,” the “Barbie” actress says.
While it’s not science-backed, eating pickles or other vinegar-fermented foods may help reduce your craving for sweets.
However, McConaughey’s love for pickles goes beyond appetite suppressing. The “How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days” actor adds finely chopped dill pickle gherkins to his tuna salad and two slices of Texas Heat Pickles to his burger. Maybe he should try Kristen Bell’s Pickle Soup recipe next.
Now, which of the pickles does he reach for in the middle of the night? That’s unclear, but with multiple jars in the fridge at a time, a little midnight pickle roulette doesn’t sound too bad.
