The single best meal of my life started with a fresh, buttered baguette and tomato soup. And though the following courses were incredible, I just wanted more soup. It was specifically a tomato bisque soup, and while I have never been able to live that experience again, this cozy dish has kept a special place in my heart ever since—until now.

Our Rich and Creamy Tomato Basil Soup offers the right silky, savory flavor that I’ve come to love about the dish. It’s a highly-rated recipe, too. One Allrecipes member calls it “the best tomato basil soup in the world!” With an average score of 4.8 stars, thanks to over 1,100 glowing 5-star reviews, this tomato-basil soup keeps our community coming back soup season after soup season.

What Makes This Soup So Rich and Creamy?

The recipe involves tomatoes, butter, and heavy whipping cream as well as tomato juice, fresh basil, and as much salt and pepper as your heart desires.

Fresh tomatoes work better than canned in this recipe because they offer a brighter, more complex flavor. Some reviewers go as far as roasting their tomatoes, which adds a deeper sweetness and rich nature to the soup. If you want to spruce up the soup with any seasonings, some home cooks turn to garlic, onion powder, red pepper flakes, a little sugar, or a topping like Parmesan cheese.

“This soup is easy, decadent and delicious. My friend said it was the best soup he has ever had,” says Allrecipes member lcosta1097. “I’m making it for the second time in one week. I made sourdough breadcrumbs, which were good in it. The flavors are complex for such an easy soup. It is sure to impress everyone you make it for.”

How to Make Tomato-Basil Soup

Add tomatoes and juice to a large pot. Bring to a simmer and cook for about 30 minutes, or until the tomatoes have softened. Then, remove the pot from the stove, add basil leaves, and use an immersion blender to purée the soup until smooth. Stir in heavy cream and butter. Finally, cook and stir over medium heat until butter is melted and season with salt and pepper. Do not let the soup boil.

Praise From the Allrecipes Community

With an average score of 4.8 stars, thanks to over 1,100 glowing 5-star reviews, this tomato-basil soup keeps our community coming back for more than just its rich and creamy characteristics.

  • “This was the creamiest, most flavorful tomato soup I’ve ever eaten,” says reviewer grandma-diane. “It was fairly easy to make. The hardest part was peeling and seeding the tomatoes. It was worth it. We had this yesterday and went out today and bought what we need to make it again. I used vine-ripe tomatoes.”
  • “This was spot on, no tweaks at all,” says Allrecipes member David. “This was a yummy decadent bowl of soup. Paired with a good grilled cheese sandwich, and it’s the perfect comfort meal.”
  • “I love tomato basil soup, but this was through the roof awesome, and so easy to make,” says reviewer Mark Bowker. “The entire family loved it. I order tomato basil soup any chance I get in restaurants, and nothing I’ve had comes close to this. And I was fortunate to have fresh basil from the garden as well as fresh locally grown tomatoes.”
